BENTON — It was as dark as the coal mines when about 100 people piled onto two buses parked in Benton around 2:30 a.m. for their long journey to Washington, D.C. — well, maybe not quite that dark.
One retired miner remarked before the bus pulled out from a lot across from Weeks Chevrolet that the last time he was up this early was when he was working the graveyard shift, pre-retirement. That drew laughter among the mostly silver-haired bunch, many sporting United Mines Workers of America hats.
